FAQs

What is a psychologist, anyway?

Think of seeing a psychologist as a chat with a friend, just a friend who provides professional, evidence-based support without judgement. We help you tackle mental health challenges, work toward your goals, and develop strategies for a happier life. Plus, we’re great listeners!

Do I need a referral?

Not always. You can book directly, but having a referral from your GP might get you Medicare rebates. Worth chatting with your doctor about it!

Is it bulk-billed?

Unfortunately, I’m not able to provide bulk-bill services at this time. However, I’m are committed to keeping our fees below the APS National Schedule of Recommended Fees.

What are the fees and rebates?

These vary depending on your referral and session type, but price transparency is important to us so all session rates are displayed on the booking portal at the ‘book here’ button above. The APS National Schedule of Suggested Fees for 2024-25 is currently $311 for a 50-60 minute session. I’m dedicated to keeping fees below this rate as much as possible, and the majority of 50 minute sessions are $280. Rebates vary so it’s best to ask when you’re booking in so I can tell you the amount that applies to you. After hours sessions are available at times, but incur a surcharge.

Do you see children and teens?

For now, Laneways is just for adult mental health so I can’t take clients under 18 years. Worried about your little person at home though? Part of the reason I don’t currently see minors is because I’ve seen a greater impact by working directly with parents and caregivers. If you’re worried about one of the younger people in your household, maybe come on in for a chat on how we can help.

How long will I need to see a Psychologist?

It varies, some people find a few sessions helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support. We’ll work together to find what suits you best, and you’ll always be kept informed of the treatment plan so you can decide what’s best for you. Ultimately, I believe my job is to try to put myself out of a job, I want to help you build strategies that help you be your own psychologist.

What’s the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Great question! Psychologists focus on therapy and mental health strategies, while psychiatrists are medical doctors and can prescribe medication. We team up when needed to provide comprehensive care.

How do I book a session?

Easy peasy - you can email us (admin@lanewayscanberra.com.au), or book online through our portal at the ‘book here’ button above. I’m here to help you get started on your mental health journey.

What if I have to cancel?

Life happens! Just give us 48 hours' notice so we can reschedule. Waitlists for mental health support in Canberra are long, I want every session, every day to be available to a client who needs it so if you can’t make it, let us know so I can try to make it available to someone else. There is a cancellation policy but I understand that things come up and will do our best to fill that spot so you don’t have to pay the fee.

Can I come in person? Can I attend online?

Happy to do either! Some people prefer telehealth, some like to come and have a space that’s all theirs. You can book whichever suits best for you. If you can’t make it to the clinic, I offer secure online sessions so you can get support from the comfort of your home (and in your PJs if you like).

Are sessions confidential?

Absolutely. What you say in our sessions stays in our sessions. The only exceptions are if you’re at risk of harm, harming someone else, or if required by law. Your privacy is our priority.

What if I’m nervous about my first session?

That’s totally normal! Our goal is to make you feel as comfortable as possible. We’ll start at your pace and make sure you feel heard and supported. You don’t have to come knowing exactly what you want to talk about either, we can work our way in slowly.

What should I bring to my session?

Whatever you need to feel comfortable for 50 minutes, as well as your mental health care plan if you haven’t had a chance to email through a copy. Other than that, feel free to bring your emotional support water bottle, fidget toys, crochet, and any manner of things that helps you feel at home. Registered support animals are welcome. You don’t need to have anything prepared to share with us, though if it feels right to come with a few notes, that’s ok too!

Can you provide a medical certificate for work?

Psychologists can’t provide medical certificates but we can write attendance letters for any work time missed to attend sessions. We can also write support letters when needed to help you in going out and seeking support in your world that suits you.

Do I have to lie on a couch?

Only if you want to! Most sessions happen in comfy chairs where you can sit, relax, and chat. Couches are optional, not mandatory.

Can you read my mind?

I wish! But no, I can’t read minds. I rely on what you share with us to understand your experiences and provide the best support possible.

Any association with the festival?

Nope! Just a case of a similar name. I’d love to say I’m cool enough to run a festival, but my idea of a wild night is reading therapy books and getting eight hours of sleep. If you’re looking for festival info, enjoy! But if you need mental health support, you’re in the right place.
